1st grade math · Unit 8: Shapes, halves, and fourths

Equal parts only

What this lesson shows

Fixes a mistake

Two pieces of different sizes are not halves.

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: rectangle (question 1). Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. Two pieces
  2. Same size?
  3. Only equal parts are halves

Helping at home

Halves must be the same size. Fold the pieces on top of each other: if they match, they are halves.

If your kid gets stuck

Do the two parts match?

Standards

  • Common Core 1.G.A.3
Partition circles and rectangles into two and four equal shares, describe the shares using the words halves, fourths, and quarters, and use the phrases half of, fourth of, and quarter of. Describe the whole as two of, or four of the shares. Understand for these examples that decomposing into more equal shares creates smaller shares.
  • Common Core 2.G.A.3
Partition circles and rectangles into two, three, or four equal shares, describe the shares using the words halves, thirds, half of, a third of, etc., and describe the whole as two halves, three thirds, four fourths. Recognize that equal shares of identical wholes need not have the same shape.
