1st grade math · Unit 3: Tally marks and pictographs

Sort two ways with a Venn diagram

What this lesson shows

Two circles that overlap: red things in one, thick things in the other. A red, thick block goes in the middle, where both are true; a thin blue one goes outside both. A yes-no chart asks one question: is it red?

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: red thick 2, red thin 1, blue thick 1, blue thin 1. Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. One circle for each rule
  2. Both true: the middle. Neither: outside
  3. Count each part
  4. A yes-no chart asks one question

Helping at home

Plain blocks are red; blocks with a dot are blue. Read each box aloud. Your kid draws two circles that overlap, red in one and thick in the other, and puts each block where it fits: both in the middle, neither outside. Then a yes-no chart: is it red? Sort toys by two rules the same way.

If your kid gets stuck

Both true: the middle. Neither: outside.

Watch it with Lux

With Lux, this lesson is a narrated video and a printed page your kid works on. Then Lux helps with the same math on their own worksheet, one question at a time.
