2nd grade math · Unit 9: Shapes and perimeter

More sides, not more lines

What this lesson shows

Fixes a mistake

A long rectangle has 4 sides but only 2 lines of symmetry. Some shapes have none.

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: a long rectangle, a lopsided shape with 4 sides. Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. Sides are not lines
  2. Fold to find lines
  3. Some shapes have none

Helping at home

Fold each shape every way you can. Count only the folds where both halves match. The number of sides does not tell you.

If your kid gets stuck

Fold, do not count sides.

Watch it with Lux

With Lux, this lesson is a narrated video and a printed page your kid works on. Then Lux helps with the same math on their own worksheet, one question at a time.
