3rd grade math · Unit 6: Data

Line plots

What this lesson shows

Books each kid read: an X over each number for each kid.

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: Books read: 3, 5, 4, 5, 2, 5, 6, 4, 3. Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. Fewest to most
  2. An X for each kid
  3. Stack the repeats
  4. Count the Xs

Helping at home

Find the fewest and the most first, and draw a number line from one to the other with a tick for every number. Go down the list, drawing one X for each number and stacking it when the number comes again. Cross each number off as you go.

If your kid gets stuck

Find the fewest and the most first.

Watch it with Lux

With Lux, this lesson is a narrated video and a printed page your kid works on. Then Lux helps with the same math on their own worksheet, one question at a time.
