4th grade math · Unit 6: Decimals and money

0.6 is not 0.06

What this lesson shows

Fixes a mistake

Six tenths is a column; six hundredths is six small squares.

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: 6/100. Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. A tenth is a whole column
  2. A hundredth is one small square
  3. The place tells the size
  4. A 0 holds the tenths place

Helping at home

Say the amount, then ask which place it names. Tenths go right after the point; hundredths go one place further, with a 0 in the tenths place when there are no tenths. Read each answer back by its last place.

If your kid gets stuck

Is it tenths or hundredths? Then choose the place.
