1st grade math · Unit 7: Money and time

Every coin, every value

What this lesson shows

Penny 1¢, nickel 5¢, dime 10¢, quarter 25¢, half-dollar 50¢, and dollar coin 100¢. Order them by what they are worth, not how big they are.

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: nickel, half-dollar, dime, penny, by value. Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. Name each coin
  2. Say its value
  3. Order by value, not size

Helping at home

Say what each coin is worth, then put the coins in order from least to most cents. A dime is small but worth more than a penny or a nickel. Real coins to hold help most.

If your kid gets stuck

What is each coin worth?

Watch it with Lux

With Lux, this lesson is a narrated video and a printed page your kid works on. Then Lux helps with the same math on their own worksheet, one question at a time.
