3rd grade math · Unit 4: Adding and subtracting

Estimate or exact?

What this lesson shows

Does the question need about how much, or exactly how much? Whether $20 is enough for 3 books near $6 each needs an estimate; the price to pay needs the exact total.

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: $20, books at $5.95, $6.10, $5.80: enough. Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. Read the question
  2. Enough, or about? Estimate
  3. Pay, or change? Exact
  4. Say why

Helping at home

Read the question before working. "Is it enough?" and "about how much?" need only an estimate. "How much to pay?" and "how much change?" need the exact answer. Ask your child to say why.

If your kid gets stuck

With Lux, this lesson is a narrated video and a printed page your kid works on. Then Lux helps with the same math on their own worksheet, one question at a time.
