3rd grade math · Unit 4: Adding and subtracting

Subtracting with regrouping

What this lesson shows

532 − 178: trade 1 ten for 10 ones, then 1 hundred for 10 tens.

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: 532 − 178. Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. Line up the ones
  2. Not enough? Trade 1 for 10
  3. Take away each place
  4. Check by adding back

Helping at home

Line up the ones and start from the right. When the top digit is not enough, cross out the digit on its left, write one less, and write 10 more above this place. Check by adding the answer to the number you took away.

If your kid gets stuck

Is the top digit enough?
