4th grade math · Unit 9: Measurement and time

Does that measurement make sense?

What this lesson shows

A door 7 meters tall? No, a door is about 2 meters. A dog that weighs 30 kilograms? Yes. Recess that lasts 3 hours? No, about 20 minutes. Compare each to something you know.

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: A door is 7 meters tall. Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. Read the number and the unit
  2. Think of something you know
  3. Far too big or too small? It does not make sense
  4. Close? It makes sense

Helping at home

Read each measurement aloud. Ask your kid to name something they know that is close, like a grown-up’s height, a bag of flour, a movie, a jug of milk, or the corner of a page. Then ask: is the measurement close to that, or far too big or too small?

If your kid gets stuck

Compare it to something you know.

Watch it with Lux

With Lux, this lesson is a narrated video and a printed page your kid works on. Then Lux helps with the same math on their own worksheet, one question at a time.
