What this lesson shows
Noon in New York is 11:00 in Chicago, 9:00 in Los Angeles, and 8:00 in Anchorage. A 3-hour flight leaves Anchorage at 8:00 and lands in Seattle at 12:00, an hour ahead.
The worked example
The lesson works this one step by step: Anchorage at 8:00 a.m., 3 hours to Seattle. Then your kid tries one like it on paper.
The steps
- West is 1 hour earlier each zone
- London is 5 hours ahead of New York
- Add the flight on the first clock
- Then change to the new zone
Helping at home
Copy the row of clocks from the video: noon in New York is 11:00 in Chicago, 10:00 in Denver, 9:00 in Los Angeles and Seattle, 8:00 in Anchorage, and 5:00 p.m. in London. For each flight, add the hours on the first city clock, then add or take away the hours the new city is ahead or behind.
If your kid gets stuck
Add the flight first, then change the zone.
Watch it with Lux
With Lux, this lesson is a narrated video and a printed page your kid works on. Then Lux helps with the same math on their own worksheet, one question at a time.
