5th grade math · Unit 7: Adding, subtracting, and multiplying fractions

Area with decimal sides

What this lesson shows

A square 0.7 inch on a side covers 49 hundredths of a square inch on a grid.

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: 0.7 × 0.7. Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. 1 square inch, 100 small squares
  2. Tenths across and down
  3. Count the hundredths

Helping at home

Draw 1 square inch as a 10 by 10 grid; each small square is 1 hundredth of a square inch. Each side in tenths covers that many columns or rows. Count the small squares covered, and check with the fact: tenths times tenths make hundredths.

If your kid gets stuck

Columns and rows on a grid, then count hundredths.
