5th grade math · Unit 7: Adding, subtracting, and multiplying fractions

Mixed numbers, unlike denominators

What this lesson shows

1 1/2 + 9 2/3: estimate more than 11, then wholes, then sixths, then regroup.

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: 1 1/2 + 9 2/3. Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. Estimate
  2. Add the wholes
  3. Rename and add the parts
  4. Parts over 1? Make a whole

Helping at home

Estimate first from the wholes and whether the parts make more than 1. Add the wholes, then rename the parts in the same parts and add them. If the parts make a whole or more, trade it for 1 whole. No simplifying needed.

If your kid gets stuck

Estimate. Wholes first, then rename and add the parts.

With Lux, this lesson is a narrated video and a printed page your kid works on. Then Lux helps with the same math on their own worksheet, one question at a time.

Standards

  • Common Core 5.NF.A.1
Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators (including mixed numbers) by replacing given fractions with equivalent fractions in such a way as to produce an equivalent sum or difference of fractions with like denominators. For example, 2/3 + 5/4 = 8/12 + 15/12 = 23/12. (In general, a/b + c/d = (ad + bc)/bd.)
