5th grade math · Unit 2: Adding and subtracting decimals, and money

Balancing a budget

What this lesson shows

Income $200, expenses $230: the budget is $30 short. Cut or change spending until expenses are no more than income, and keep a record.

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: $200 in, $90 + $40 + $60 + $40 out. Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. Record money in and money out
  2. Short: expenses − income
  3. Cut until out is no more than in

Helping at home

Read each budget aloud. Your kid adds the expenses, subtracts the income to see how far short it is, then lowers fun and clothes by that much and adds again.

If your kid gets stuck

Add what goes out, then compare with what comes in.

Watch it with Lux

With Lux, this lesson is a narrated video and a printed page your kid works on. Then Lux helps with the same math on their own worksheet, one question at a time.
