5th grade math · Unit 2: Adding and subtracting decimals, and money

Taxes, gross and net

What this lesson shows

A $500 paycheck before taxes is gross income. After $60 of payroll tax, $440 is net income. Then sales tax on a purchase, and property tax on a home.

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: $500 less $60 tax; $24 plus $2 tax. Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. Gross: pay before taxes
  2. Net: pay after taxes
  3. Sales tax is added when you buy

Helping at home

Read each problem aloud. Gross income is pay before taxes; your kid subtracts the payroll tax to find net income. Sales tax is added to a price.

If your kid gets stuck

Gross − tax = net. Price + sales tax = what you pay.
