5th grade math · Unit 5: Multiplying and dividing decimals

Decimals from facts you know

What this lesson shows

8 × 7 = 56, so 8 × 0.7 is 56 tenths, 5.6, and 0.08 × 7 is 0.56.

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: 8 × 0.7. Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. Find the fact
  2. Say it in tenths or hundredths
  3. Check the size

Helping at home

Start from the whole-number fact: 8 × 7 = 56. Then say the decimal in units: 0.7 is 7 tenths, so 8 × 0.7 is 56 tenths, 5.6. Check the size: times less than 1 makes it smaller.

If your kid gets stuck

Find the fact first, then say the decimal in tenths or hundredths.

Watch it with Lux

With Lux, this lesson is a narrated video and a printed page your kid works on. Then Lux helps with the same math on their own worksheet, one question at a time.
