5th grade math · Unit 5: Multiplying and dividing decimals

Tenths times tenths on a grid

What this lesson shows

0.2 × 0.5 on a 10 by 10 grid: the overlap is 10 hundredths, 0.10.

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: 0.2 × 0.5. Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. Shade the columns
  2. Shade the rows across
  3. Count the overlap in hundredths

Helping at home

Draw a 10 by 10 grid. Shade the second number as columns, then the first as rows across. The overlap is the product, counted in small squares: hundredths. Check that it is smaller than both numbers.

If your kid gets stuck

Shade columns, then rows. Count the overlap in hundredths.

Watch it with Lux

With Lux, this lesson is a narrated video and a printed page your kid works on. Then Lux helps with the same math on their own worksheet, one question at a time.
