2nd grade math · Unit 6: Money

Writing money with ¢ and $

What this lesson shows

A quarter, a dime, and 2 pennies make 37¢. With a dollar sign it is $0.37: the dot sits between dollars and cents. A dollar coin and a nickel make $1.05.

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: 1 quarter, 1 dime, 2 pennies. Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. Count on, biggest first
  2. Write the cents with ¢
  3. Dollars, a dot, then cents
  4. Two digits after the dot

Helping at home

Count the coins biggest value first, then write the value two ways: with the cent sign and with a dollar sign, as 37¢ is $0.37. The dot sits between dollars and cents, and two digits always follow it.

If your kid gets stuck

Count the cents first.

Watch it with Lux

With Lux, this lesson is a narrated video and a printed page your kid works on. Then Lux helps with the same math on their own worksheet, one question at a time.
