2nd grade math · Unit 6: Money

Counting coins

What this lesson shows

A quarter, 2 dimes, and a nickel: 25, 35, 45, 50. That is 50¢.

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: 1 quarter, 2 dimes, 1 nickel. Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. Biggest first
  2. Start at 25
  3. Count on by each value
  4. Write the cents

Helping at home

Line the coins up, biggest value first. Start with the quarters by 25s, then count on the dimes by 10s, the nickels by 5s, and the pennies by 1s.

If your kid gets stuck

Start with the quarter.

Watch it with Lux
