2nd grade math · Unit 8: Measuring length

Count the inches, not the marks

What this lesson shows

Fixes a mistake

A ruler has small marks between its numbers. A crayon from 0 to 3 is 3 inches, not one inch for every mark.

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: 0 to 3 inches. Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. Small marks split an inch
  2. An inch is number to number
  3. Count the inches

Helping at home

The small marks split each inch into parts. Count the spaces from one number to the next: each is 1 inch.

If your kid gets stuck

Count from number to number.
