2nd grade math · Unit 8: Measuring length

Guess, then measure

What this lesson shows

Guess a length from things we know, such as a paper clip is about an inch, then measure and see how close.

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: crayon (question 1). Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. Clip: about 1 inch
  2. Fingertip: about 1 centimeter
  3. Ruler: 1 foot. Big step: about 1 meter
  4. Guess, then measure

Helping at home

Guess first with things you know: a paper clip is about 1 inch, a fingertip about 1 centimeter, a ruler 1 foot, a big step about 1 meter. Then measure and see how close the guess was. Close is good.

If your kid gets stuck

What do you know that is about that long?
