3rd grade math · Unit 5: Fractions

Bigger bottom, smaller piece

What this lesson shows

Fixes a mistake

5/4 is less than 5/2, though 4 is more than 2.

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: 5/4 ○ 5/2. Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. Two lines the same length
  2. Count the jumps
  3. Bigger bottom, smaller jumps

Helping at home

When the tops match, draw two number lines the same length, each cut into its own parts. Count the top number of jumps on each. The one that lands farther from 0 is bigger.

If your kid gets stuck

Write <, >, or =. Count jumps on two lines.

Watch it with Lux

With Lux, this lesson is a narrated video and a printed page your kid works on. Then Lux helps with the same math on their own worksheet, one question at a time.

Standards

  • Common Core 3.NF.A.3d
Compare two fractions with the same numerator or the same denominator by reasoning about their size. Recognize that comparisons are valid only when the two fractions refer to the same whole. Record the results of comparisons with the symbols >, =, or <, and justify the conclusions, e.g., by using a visual fraction model.
