3rd grade math · Unit 5: Fractions

One part of equal parts

What this lesson shows

1/4 as part of a shape, part of a set, and a point on a number line.

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: 1/4. Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. Cut into equal parts
  2. Shade one part
  3. Part of a set
  4. A point on the line

Helping at home

The bottom number says how many equal parts make the whole; the top says how many we take. Cut the bar into that many equal parts, make a set with that many circles, and cut the line from 0 to 1 the same way.

If your kid gets stuck

How many equal parts make the whole?
