3rd grade math · Unit 5: Fractions

Fractions on a number line

What this lesson shows

Each jump is one unit fraction: 5/3 is five thirds from 0.

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: 5/3. Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. Cut each whole the same
  2. Jump one part at a time
  3. Mark the point

Helping at home

Draw a line from 0 to 2 and cut each whole into the bottom number of equal parts. Start at 0 and jump one part at a time, counting, until you reach the top number.

If your kid gets stuck

Each jump is one part. Count the jumps.

Watch it with Lux
