Crossing is not perpendicular

What this lesson shows

Fixes a mistake

Two lines can cross without a square corner.

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: line BC intersecting line DE, not perpendicular, line FG perpendicular to line HJ. Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. Crossing lines intersect
  2. Test with a paper corner
  3. It fits: perpendicular
  4. It misses: just intersecting

Helping at home

Lay the corner of a sheet of paper where the lines cross, one edge along a line. If the other edge lies along the other line, they are perpendicular. If it misses, they only intersect.

If your kid gets stuck

Lay a paper corner where they cross.

Watch it with Lux

With Lux, this lesson is a narrated video and a printed page your kid works on. Then Lux helps with the same math on their own worksheet, one question at a time.
