3rd grade math · Unit 7: Measurement and time

Measurement word problems

What this lesson shows

Compare and combine grams, milliliters, or feet, with the unit in the answer.

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: 450 grams and 275 grams, how much more. Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. A bar for each amount
  2. Compare: subtract
  3. Combine: add
  4. Keep the unit

Helping at home

Draw a bar for each amount. "How much more" or "heavier" compares, so subtract; "together" or "in all" combines, so add. Write the unit after the answer.

If your kid gets stuck

Compare or combine? Then write the unit.

Standards

  • Common Core 3.MD.A.2
Measure and estimate liquid volumes and masses of objects using standard units of grams (g), kilograms (kg), and liters (l). Add, subtract, multiply, or divide to solve one-step word problems involving masses or volumes that are given in the same units, e.g., by using drawings (such as a beaker with a measurement scale) to represent the problem.
