3rd grade math · Unit 7: Measurement and time

Telling time to the minute

What this lesson shows

3:19 is 15 by fives and 4 more, then a.m. or p.m.

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: 3:19 p.m. Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. The short hand: the hour
  2. By 5s
  3. Then by 1s
  4. a.m. or p.m.

Helping at home

Put the long hand on the minute first, counting by 5s and then by 1s. Then put the short hand just past the hour, moving it further toward the next hour the more minutes have passed.

If your kid gets stuck

Count by 5s, then by 1s.

Watch it with Lux
