3rd grade math · Unit 1: Multiplication and division

One pattern, two ways

What this lesson shows

Triangles made of toothpicks: 3, 6, 9. A table lists the triangles, 1, 2, 3, beside the toothpicks, 3, 6, 9. Each new triangle adds 3 toothpicks in the picture and 3 in the table.

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: 1, 2, 3 triangles of toothpicks. Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. One row for each picture
  2. Count the toothpicks
  3. A shape more or less: its toothpicks too
  4. Read the table both ways

Helping at home

Your kid counts the toothpicks in each picture and writes them in a table, one row a picture. Point to a row and ask: "Which picture is this? What changed from the last one?"

If your kid gets stuck

One row for each picture: the shapes, then the toothpicks.

Watch it with Lux

With Lux, this lesson is a narrated video and a printed page your kid works on. Then Lux helps with the same math on their own worksheet, one question at a time.
