4th grade math · Unit 1: Place value to a million

Big numbers three ways

What this lesson shows

One number in standard, expanded, and word form, period by period.

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: 352,817. Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. Read it by periods
  2. Add what each digit is worth
  3. Or digit times place
  4. Words: each period, then its name

Helping at home

Read the number by its periods first: the thousands before the comma, the ones after it. For expanded form, write what each digit is worth and add them, skipping any 0. For words, read each period like a small number and say its name.

If your kid gets stuck

Find the comma, then read each period.

Watch it with Lux

With Lux, this lesson is a narrated video and a printed page your kid works on. Then Lux helps with the same math on their own worksheet, one question at a time.
