4th grade math · Unit 1: Place value to a million

Ten times as much

What this lesson shows

A digit slides one place left and becomes 10 times as much; one place right, one tenth.

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: the 6 in 3,615 and in 6,152. Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. Find the place
  2. Say what it is worth
  3. Left: 10 times as much
  4. Right: one tenth as much

Helping at home

Find the digit in each number and name its place. Say what it is worth: "6 hundreds is 600". One place to the left is 10 times as much, because 10 of a place make 1 of the next. One place to the right is one tenth as much.

If your kid gets stuck

Name the place of the digit in each number first.
