4th grade math · Unit 1: Place value to a million

The zeros you don’t hear

What this lesson shows

Fixes a mistake

"Three thousand four" is 3,004, not 30,004. Zeros hold the empty places.

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: 3,004. Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. Thousands, then a comma
  2. Three places after it
  3. Write what is said
  4. A 0 in each empty place

Helping at home

Write the thousands and the comma first. After the comma come exactly three places: hundreds, tens, ones. Put each digit you hear in its place, then a 0 in every place nobody says. Read the number back to check it.

If your kid gets stuck

After the comma, draw three blanks first.
