5th grade math · Unit 10: Data

Clean the data first

What this lesson shows

A table of jump-rope counts: one says twenty, one is blank, one says 4000. Write twenty as 20, leave the blank out, and check the 4000, likely a typo for 40.

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: jump counts 35, twenty, blank, 4000, 42, 28. Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. Words: write the number
  2. Blank: leave it out, not 0
  3. Cannot be right: check it
  4. Then use the clean data

Helping at home

Read each list aloud. Your kid writes a clean list: every count as a number, the blank left out, and the count that cannot be right checked. Ask why a blank is not the same as 0.

If your kid gets stuck

Write a clean list beside it.

Watch it with Lux

With Lux, this lesson is a narrated video and a printed page your kid works on. Then Lux helps with the same math on their own worksheet, one question at a time.
