5th grade math · Unit 10: Data

Mean as a fair share

What this lesson shows

Towers of 3, 5, 7, and 9 cubes leveled out to 6 each. Then add and divide.

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: Cubes in each tower: 3, 5, 7, 9. Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. Level them out
  2. Every tower the same
  3. Add, then divide

Helping at home

The mean is the fair share: move cubes from the tall towers to the short ones until every tower is the same. To check, add all the cubes and divide by the number of towers.

If your kid gets stuck

Level them out, then add and divide.

Standards

  • Common Core 5.MD.B.2
Make a line plot to display a data set of measurements in fractions of a unit (1/2, 1/4, 1/8). Use operations on fractions for this grade to solve problems involving information presented in line plots. For example, given different measurements of liquid in identical beakers, find the amount of liquid each beaker would contain if the total amount in all the beakers were redistributed equally.
