5th grade math · Unit 1: Decimal place value

Many names for one decimal

What this lesson shows

2.34 as 234 hundredths, or 1 one, 13 tenths, and 4 hundredths.

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: 2.34 in its last place. Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. All in the last place
  2. Trade 1 one for 10 tenths
  3. Check with a sum

Helping at home

One is 10 tenths or 100 hundredths, and one tenth is 10 hundredths. Trading a bigger unit for 10 of the next smaller one gives the same number a new name.

If your kid gets stuck

How many of the smaller unit make one of the bigger?
