5th grade math · Unit 1: Decimal place value

Ten times, one tenth

What this lesson shows

The 4 in 4, 40, and 400, then in 0.4 and 0.04: one place left is 10 times as much, one place right is 1/10.

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: the 4 in 400 and in 0.04. Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. Find the place
  2. One place right: 1/10
  3. One place left: 10 times

Helping at home

A digit one place to the right is worth one tenth as much; one place to the left, 10 times as much. It works the same on both sides of the point: 4 tens, 4 ones, 4 tenths.

If your kid gets stuck

Find each digit’s place in a chart.
