What this lesson shows
A fence around a garden needs perimeter, the length around. Grass seed to cover the garden needs area. Sand to fill a sandbox needs volume.
The worked example
The lesson works this one step by step: How much fence goes around a garden. Then your kid tries one like it on paper.
The steps
- Ask what the job does
- Around the edge: perimeter
- Cover a flat space: area
- Fill a space: volume
Helping at home
Read each question aloud. Ask your kid what the job does: go around the edge, cover a flat space, or fill a space. Around is perimeter, in feet. Cover is area, in square feet. Fill is volume, in cubic feet. Your kid says why, not only which.
If your kid gets stuck
Around, cover, or fill?
Watch it with Lux
With Lux, this lesson is a narrated video and a printed page your kid works on. Then Lux helps with the same math on their own worksheet, one question at a time.
