Making a bar graph

What this lesson shows

Pets: 5 cats, 6 dogs, 4 hamsters, 2 fish. Add a title, labels, and a scale of ones.

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: soccer 5, baseball 6, swimming 4. Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. Two lines
  2. A scale of ones
  3. A label for each bar
  4. A title

Helping at home

Draw a line along the bottom and one up the side. Number the side by ones from 0. Label each bar, draw it up to its count, then add a title.

If your kid gets stuck

Scale, labels, bars, title.
