2nd grade math · Unit 5: Equal parts and time

Quarter past, half past, quarter to

What this lesson shows

A clock face in four quarters. At 3:15 the minute hand has gone a quarter of the way around: quarter past 3. At 3:30, half past 3. At 3:45 a quarter is left before 4: quarter to 4.

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: 3:15 p.m. Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. Quarter past: on the 3
  2. Half past: on the 6
  3. Quarter to: on the 9
  4. A quarter hour is 15 minutes

Helping at home

Draw a line from 12 to 6 and one from 3 to 9. Quarter past: the long hand on 3. Half past: on 6. Quarter to the next hour: on 9. Then ask how long things take: brushing teeth, lunch, a bath.

If your kid gets stuck

Quarters of the clock.

Watch it with Lux

With Lux, this lesson is a narrated video and a printed page your kid works on. Then Lux helps with the same math on their own worksheet, one question at a time.
