2nd grade math · Unit 5: Equal parts and time

Same size, different shapes

What this lesson shows

A square cake cut into 4 rectangles, then into 4 triangles. Both ways make fourths.

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: square cake (question 1). Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. Cut into 4 rectangles: fourths
  2. Cut into 4 triangles: fourths
  3. Different shapes, same size

Helping at home

Cut two paper squares the same size into fourths, one into strips and one corner to corner. Lay a strip on two triangles: each part is one fourth of the same square.

If your kid gets stuck

Are the parts the same size?

Watch it with Lux

With Lux, this lesson is a narrated video and a printed page your kid works on. Then Lux helps with the same math on their own worksheet, one question at a time.
