2nd grade math · Unit 5: Equal parts and time

Time to five minutes

What this lesson shows

The minute hand on 7 means 35 minutes: count 5, 10, 15, up to 35. The time is 4:35.

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: 4:35 p.m. Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. The short hand: the hour it passed
  2. Each number is 5 minutes
  3. Count by 5s to the long hand

Helping at home

Read the hour from the short hand: the number it has passed. Then count by 5s round the clock to the long hand for the minutes.

If your kid gets stuck

Count by 5s to the long hand.
