Kindergarten math · Unit 4: Putting together and taking apart

Ways to make 5

What this lesson shows

5 counters, some filled and some empty: 4 and 1, 3 and 2, 2 and 3, 1 and 4, then 5 and 0.

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: 5 as 4 and 1. Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. Fill some in
  2. Leave the rest empty
  3. The two parts make the number
  4. Turned around, still the same

Helping at home

Read each box aloud. Your kid counts the empty counters and writes the missing part. With 5 pennies in two hands, ask "how many in this hand?"

If your kid gets stuck

Count the empty ones. That is the other part.
