4th grade math · Unit 7: Data

Mode, median, and range

What this lesson shows

Order the data first, then find the most, the middle, and the spread.

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: Books read: 7, 3, 9, 4, 12, 2, 4, 10, 5. Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. Order the data
  2. Mode: comes up most
  3. Median: the middle
  4. Range: greatest − least

Helping at home

Write the numbers in order first, keeping every repeat. The mode comes up most often. For the median, cross off the least and the greatest, then the next two, until one number is left. The range is the greatest minus the least.

If your kid gets stuck

Write the numbers in order first.

Watch it with Lux

With Lux, this lesson is a narrated video and a printed page your kid works on. Then Lux helps with the same math on their own worksheet, one question at a time.
