What this lesson shows
Tens as stems, ones as leaves, in order, with the key.
The worked example
The lesson works this one step by step: Jumps without stopping: 47, 23, 38, 52, 41, 27, 44, 58, 44, 36. Then your kid tries one like it on paper.
The steps
- Order the data
- Tens are the stems
- Ones are the leaves
- Write a key
Helping at home
Put the data in order first. Write the tens digits down the left of a line as stems, with no gaps between them. Each number’s ones digit is a leaf in its stem’s row, least to greatest, and a number that comes twice gets two leaves. Finish with a key, and count the leaves against the data.
If your kid gets stuck
Put the numbers in order first.
Watch it with Lux
With Lux, this lesson is a narrated video and a printed page your kid works on. Then Lux helps with the same math on their own worksheet, one question at a time.
