4th grade math · Unit 7: Data

Same data, different graph

What this lesson shows

Votes for three lunches, tacos 20, pizza 24, and soup 22, drawn twice. With the scale starting at 0, the bars look close. With the scale starting at 18, pizza's bar looks three times as tall as tacos'. Reordered tallest first, no bar changes. The data did not change; the picture did.

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: votes 20, 24, 22, from 18. Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. From 0: the bars look as close as they are
  2. From higher up: small gaps look big
  3. Reordering changes the order, not the bars
  4. Check where the scale starts

Helping at home

Read each problem aloud. Your kid draws the votes twice, once with the scale from 0 and once from the number given, then says which graph makes the votes look far apart, and why. Last, the bars go tallest first. Ask: did any votes change?

If your kid gets stuck

Check where the scale starts.

Watch it with Lux

With Lux, this lesson is a narrated video and a printed page your kid works on. Then Lux helps with the same math on their own worksheet, one question at a time.
