What this lesson shows
Fixes a mistake
3 ÷ 1/5 is 15, more than 3: count how many fifths fit.
The worked example
The lesson works this one step by step: 3 ÷ 1/5. Then your kid tries one like it on paper.
The steps
- Not always smaller
- How many pieces fit?
- Wholes times pieces
Helping at home
Dividing by a unit fraction asks how many of those pieces fit, so the answer is more than the whole number. Count the pieces in each whole, then multiply: 3 ÷ 1/5 = 3 × 5 = 15.
If your kid gets stuck
How many pieces fit? More or less than the whole number?
Watch it with Lux
With Lux, this lesson is a narrated video and a printed page your kid works on. Then Lux helps with the same math on their own worksheet, one question at a time.
Standards
- Common Core 5.NF.B.7b
Interpret division of a whole number by a unit fraction, and compute such quotients. For example, create a story context for 4 ÷ (1/5), and use a visual fraction model to show the quotient. Use the relationship between multiplication and division to explain that 4 ÷ (1/5) = 20 because 20 × (1/5) = 4.
