Fraction division stories

What this lesson shows

Same numbers, two stories: 1/2 gallon of ice cream for 6 friends is 1/12 gallon each, and 6 pounds of peanuts in 1/2-pound bags is 12 bags.

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: 1/2 ÷ 6. Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. Sharing a part: smaller
  2. Counting parts: bigger
  3. Draw it, then write the equation

Helping at home

Ask what is being divided. A part shared among people is fraction ÷ whole number: each share is smaller. Wholes cut into equal parts is whole number ÷ fraction: count how many parts fit, so the answer is bigger. Draw each story, then write its equation.

If your kid gets stuck

Sharing a part, or counting parts? Draw it first.

Watch it with Lux

With Lux, this lesson is a narrated video and a printed page your kid works on. Then Lux helps with the same math on their own worksheet, one question at a time.

Solve real world problems involving division of unit fractions by non-zero whole numbers and division of whole numbers by unit fractions, e.g., by using visual fraction models and equations to represent the problem. For example, how much chocolate will each person get if 3 people share 1/2 lb of chocolate equally? How many 1/3-cup servings are in 2 cups of raisins?
