5th grade math · Unit 8: Fractions as division

How many pieces fit?

What this lesson shows

8 brownies cut into fourths: 8 ÷ 1/4 = 32 pieces.

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: 8 ÷ 1/4. Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. How many pieces fit?
  2. Pieces in each whole
  3. Wholes times pieces

Helping at home

Dividing by a unit fraction asks how many of those pieces fit. Each whole holds as many pieces as the bottom number, so multiply the wholes by the bottom: 8 ÷ 1/4 = 8 × 4 = 32.

If your kid gets stuck

How many pieces fit in each whole? Then in all?

Standards

  • Common Core 5.NF.B.7b
Interpret division of a whole number by a unit fraction, and compute such quotients. For example, create a story context for 4 ÷ (1/5), and use a visual fraction model to show the quotient. Use the relationship between multiplication and division to explain that 4 ÷ (1/5) = 20 because 20 × (1/5) = 4.
