5th grade math · Unit 8: Fractions as division

Sharing a unit fraction

What this lesson shows

1/4 of a pan split 8 ways: each gets 1/32 of the pan.

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: 1/4 ÷ 8. Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. Shade the part
  2. Cut it into equal shares
  3. Name a share of the whole

Helping at home

Draw the whole and shade the unit fraction. Cut that part into as many equal pieces as there are people sharing. Cut the rest of the whole the same way, and count all the pieces: one share is 1 over that count. Sharing makes each part smaller.

If your kid gets stuck

Cut the part, then cut the whole the same way.

Standards

  • Common Core 5.NF.B.7a
Interpret division of a unit fraction by a non-zero whole number, and compute such quotients. For example, create a story context for (1/3) ÷ 4, and use a visual fraction model to show the quotient. Use the relationship between multiplication and division to explain that (1/3) ÷ 4 = 1/12 because (1/12) × 4 = 1/3.
