5th grade math · Unit 6: The coordinate plane and patterns

Points on the coordinate plane

What this lesson shows

Two number lines meet at (0, 0). (3, 5) is 3 right, then 5 up.

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: (3, 5). Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. Start at the origin
  2. Go across: the first number
  3. Go up: the second number

Helping at home

Start every point at the origin, (0, 0). The first number says how far across, along the x-axis; the second says how far up. Mark the point and label it with its pair.

If your kid gets stuck

Across first, then up.

Watch it with Lux

With Lux, this lesson is a narrated video and a printed page your kid works on. Then Lux helps with the same math on their own worksheet, one question at a time.

Standards

  • Common Core 5.G.A.1
Use a pair of perpendicular number lines, called axes, to define a coordinate system, with the intersection of the lines (the origin) arranged to coincide with the 0 on each line and a given point in the plane located by using an ordered pair of numbers, called its coordinates. Understand that the first number indicates how far to travel from the origin in the direction of one axis, and the second number indicates how far to travel in the direction of the second axis, with the convention that the names of the two axes and the coordinates correspond (e.g., x-axis and x-coordinate, y-axis and y-coordinate).
