5th grade math · Unit 6: The coordinate plane and patterns

A zero puts it on an axis

What this lesson shows

Fixes a mistake

(0, 6) sits on the y-axis: 0 steps right, 6 up.

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: (0, 6). Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. 0 across: on the y-axis
  2. 0 up: on the x-axis
  3. Across first, then up

Helping at home

A 0 in a pair means do not move that way at all. (0, 6) goes 0 across and 6 up, so it sits on the y-axis; (6, 0) sits on the x-axis.

If your kid gets stuck

A 0 means stay put that way.

Watch it with Lux

With Lux, this lesson is a narrated video and a printed page your kid works on. Then Lux helps with the same math on their own worksheet, one question at a time.

Standards

  • Common Core 5.G.A.1
Use a pair of perpendicular number lines, called axes, to define a coordinate system, with the intersection of the lines (the origin) arranged to coincide with the 0 on each line and a given point in the plane located by using an ordered pair of numbers, called its coordinates. Understand that the first number indicates how far to travel from the origin in the direction of one axis, and the second number indicates how far to travel in the direction of the second axis, with the convention that the names of the two axes and the coordinates correspond (e.g., x-axis and x-coordinate, y-axis and y-coordinate).
