5th grade math · Unit 6: The coordinate plane and patterns

Tables from a rule

What this lesson shows

A party costs $100 for the room and $4.50 for each student. A table: 10 students cost $145, 20 cost $190, 30 cost $235. Each 10 more students adds $45. A spreadsheet works out the same table from one formula.

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: party: $100 plus $4.50 each. Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. Write the rule
  2. Each row: times, then add the start
  3. Find what each 10 more adds
  4. A spreadsheet copies one formula
  5. The points make a line

Helping at home

Your kid writes the rule, makes a table for 10, 20, and 30 students, and finds how much each 10 students adds. Ask: "What stays the same in every row? What grows?"

If your kid gets stuck

Each row: the cost for each student times the students, plus the start.

Watch it with Lux

With Lux, this lesson is a narrated video and a printed page your kid works on. Then Lux helps with the same math on their own worksheet, one question at a time.
